VNC Authentication failed

All PC are running Windows 98.
I've set a password in a VNC server. I have no problem logging into that
server from another workstation using the VNC Viewer. However when I add the
registry DWord "AllowProperties" with a value of zero in the above server,
when I try to log in from the same Viewer I get the message "VNC
Authentication Failed".
If I then change the above DWord value to 1 I can again log in sucessfully.
Any ideas?
