No you don't. All you need is to know the external IP that is being
assigned by your ISP. This can be given a number of different ways from a
phone call, e-mail, dynamic DNS, etc. Static is more convenient because you
can just memorize it, but it is by no means a requirement.

I use a dynamic DNS service and don't have any trouble using my domain name.
If you know the IP without the name then great, but as long as your DNS is
configured correctly it doesn't make a difference if you are using the name
I assume by "attempting connection by iCMP" you mean ping, and this can be
done equally well with IP or host name. Of course if your ISP (or NAT
device) blocks pings this won't help you.
