How can I get the highest speed across internet connection ?

Hi, guys:

I'm using real-vnc3.3.7 on windows2k boxes. It's a good experience to
across my computer when in another city, right ?
Thanks to all developers who made such a good thing for us!

I've found that the performance is not as well as I expected since
here's a not-so-good traffic internet in my area.
How can I improve it then ?
There're several protocols in RFB, RAW/CopyRect/RRE/CoRRE/ZRLE/Hextile,
which one or what combination is the best choice in my status ?
8-bit is critical for me, I know that.
