Can't get systray icon to appear (win9x)

Have you tried manually running the "Service Helper".

The archive message you mentioned, is it bug 23 here:
http://www.realvnc.com/3.3.5-known-bugs.html
(I guess rereading that bug it was about using VNC in app mode.)
