Logout - Login under Linux

Maybe me stupid, but no answer found.
In Windoze XP I noticed that vnc offers the 'real' machine screen, that
is I can log out and in again as another user.
In Linux, when I log off, it's done. A black screen and I have to log
on physically or restart the process otherwise. Is there a chance to
end up at the normal (graphical) logon after logging out ?
