Password length problems

We are running VNC v3.3.6 and 3.3.7 on several machines.  These use a
mixture of Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
 
My question is whether there is a maximum length for a VNC password.
 
The password I am trying to use is in the format similar to "hello1234".
 
I set this on the server for each PC, but I find that I can then log on with
just using "hello123" or "hello123" plus any other extra characters on the
end of it as well.
 
Is this a known bug, or is the password maximum simply 8 characters.
