I have noticed this with kterm also.  I got around it by just using the
gnome terminal which seems to work fine.  I think this is a font issue,
but I am not sure about that.

For some reason, evolution is brain dead about which display it should
run on if you have another X session for the same user.  Simply give it
a hint by starting it like this:

evolution --display = :1
