Automatic connection setup?

I'm sure someone has tried this before, but here is my
question:

I have a machine behind a firewall that I want to
control.  I will have access to it once, then I won't
have any more in-person acess, except to call up the
people near that machine and annoy them.

The machine I'm using to control the machine behind
the firewall is at a fixed IP.

So, is there a way to get the firewalled machine to
"check" to see if I want to control it every so often?
 I can't think of any other way to initiate control of
a firewalled machine without it initiating a check for control.
