newbie ? - no screen after login

I have looked all over for help on this. I've installed the server 3.3.7 on 
my xp at work and the vncviewer at home on a Win98 machine. I know the server 
works because I tested it through another machine at work. I also did a ping 
test from home and the connection was fine.  I have a dialup connection to 
the internet. When I start VNCViewer, I get the screen for the ip addr then I 
get the password screen. Once I press enter, nothing happens.  Any 
suggestions?  I have reloaded VNC many times.
