Restart and password problems

John, Here are the steps I take for installing vnc and setting password.
Install VNC and server
Restart computer
Set password, click apply and click ok. Verify I can shadow computer.
Install Service helper, reboot
I then cannot connect remotely and have to go to the server. I log onto the
server and I am then able to shadow the server.
Also, there are some instances were I have installed on a workstation that I
cannot connect to remotely after rebooting and I go to the workstation and
log on. VNC then asks for a password every time but only after each reboot.
If I set the password I can connect but only up to the point were I have to
reboot again.

Thank you,

Yeah, what am I meant to do about it? Its our company policy. At least I
removed the damn signature they make us add to every email, which is another
10 lines!
Its notes, either that or your mail client. Both my mail clients, outlook
here at home, and my notes at work display the message fine, without any
headers! So I suggest you *try* to do something about your mail reader. No
one else has moaned about my emails here, and I have asked a few in the past
few days, so its probably just you!
Ben

Well, if others don't have a problem with it, fine. I added it to
the "boring headers" list - which is something I rarely have to do,
and which most users won't know about, by the way.

Thanks Will, I'll give it a try tomorrow at work. I've only been using vnc
for 2 days, good product, just getting to grips with installing it on 140
PCs all at once!

Greetings,

I didn't see this in the archives, or in a known issues file.. (I didn't
look
very hard, I'll admit)..

While testing something unrelated to VNC, we found when doing a port scan or
just using telnet directly.. if you connect to port 5900 on a Windows box
running the vnc server, but never speak it's protocol (open and close)..
It'll
change the servers background image to whatever it had as a default.

The mitigating factor in this, is the background must be set with Internet
explorer, by right clicking on an image and telling it to 'set this image as
a
background'

Further, if you only have ONE background in your windows backgrounds section
(the internet explorer one).. it wont lose its background right away, but if
you open any windows, it will not refresh your background image, and will
only
show your default background color.. if you hit f5 and refresh, the entire
background image goes away, replaced by the default color.

Both boxes tested against were NT 4.0.. One with SP6a, and SP3. Also
Windows
2000.. It happens whether 'remove desktop wallpaper' is enabled, or
disabled.

(only 3.3.4 was test on win2k)

I did see a bug about "Desktop wallpaper is not removed when the a viewer
connects, despite the "Remove Desktop Wallpaper" option being selected in
vncserver properties."

However, this isn't even authenticated, it's just hitting it on the port and
that's it... and that bug is just the opposite.

Indeed it might, and I'm sure Mr. Weatherall will be pleased to do so
as soon as he actually notices the problem. Of course, "pleased" is
precisely the opposite of what mood he'll actually be in when he does
so.

For my part, I've simply set up a temporary filter so that Mr.
Koenig's automated flood ends up in the bin, where it doesn't disturb
me quite so much.

Folks, posting comments to the list about Jeff Koenig was foolish.
Each such comment added one more mail loop to the flood.
Didn't you notice each message was his mail-bot quoting
in full a previous message?

Sensible response is to complain to postmaster@experian.com

Yes, I know, I just started one, too. PLEASE don't reply
to this or any of those!

Reply-To: vnc-list@realvnc.com

I can't type tilde (~) or grave (also callled backquote or tick, `), either
by typing the character alone or followed by a space (which could be
acceptable for me). It seems to be a recurrent problem, but I couldn't find
a solution to it in mailing lists or archives :-(
I'm running a 3.3.3r2 vncserver on RedHat 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3, and the viewer
is a VncViewer 3.3.4 on Windows. The keyboard is a french AZERTY keyboard
(~ is on the same key as 2, ` is with 7).

Does anybody have some information which could help me ?
Thanks
Patrice

You can have a dedicated vncserver running for all users. Better setup your
system as on http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp . This
will start a vncserver on the fly. Most likely, you only need to adapt the
/etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf files.

Details for /etc/inetd.conf file: use your own path to Xvnc, use an account
that can create sockets (`sys` or `bin` instead-of `nobody`) and add the
font path (with -fp option) as you use on the console (see `xset -q` there).

Most likely, specially on sun, you have no right to create the socket.
Search the archives for 'sun' or 'Solaris' and you will find the problems
(and a solution)

One solution with the above link setup is starting the Xvnc (in the
inetd.conf file) with a proper user.

You don't have success with `Xvnc :4 -query localhost`? That's Sun-Solaris
setup, better ask a solaris guru.
