tilde and grave problem

I can't type tilde (~) or grave (also callled backquote or tick, `), either
by typing the character alone or followed by a space (which could be
acceptable for me). It seems to be a recurrent problem, but I couldn't find
a solution to it in mailing lists or archives :-(
I'm running a 3.3.3r2 vncserver on RedHat 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3, and the viewer
is a VncViewer 3.3.4 on Windows. The keyboard is a french AZERTY keyboard
(~ is on the same key as 2, ` is with 7).

Does anybody have some information which could help me ?
