That sounds very odd indeed.

Next thing to check would be the event log; try to see if there are any odd
events showing up.

The strange  thing is that you should get a rejection very quickly over a
local LAN.  What I am concerned about is that you may have significant other
issues with your network if you were getting a connection rejected.

Could you post the actual message you get back?  I am asking because it
sounds more like the attempt to connect is timing out than that it is
connecting and being rejected.  If you can, also do a ping against the
server.
