Always have copyrect encoding enabled.  TightVNC provides a number of
additional optimizations, one of the best of which is local mouse cursor
handling.  You might try tight encoding as well, but it might not make a
difference if your pipe is big enough.  Try both tight and hextile and
see which one responds better.

If you are using the Windows VNC server, you could try the experimental
VNC video driver which significantly increases performance on the server
side:
