Have you tried a minimal xstartup, perhaps something like this?

  #!/bin/sh
  xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
  xsetroot -solid grey
  xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &

My guess is that it is Xsession that is not working for some reason, and
it would be good to try a simpler startup.
