Does the irix machine answer dhcp calls? Try `Xvnc :4 -query irixmachine`,
it might give you a login and hence complete login session.

That uses the dhcp system to put up the complete login windowing system: cde
on hp-ux and solaris, kde or gnome on linux etc, even DecSession on Vax/VMS
machines!
