authentication failure

I hope this has not been covered, I haven't seen anything about this on
the
lists or manual.

When I try to connect between a win nt and a win ce machine, I get an
authentication error ( both ways) even though I know the password I
entered in the "vnc icons" are correct. Both have VNC started from the
"startup" directory, not as a service. When I set them to listen mode I
can make connections. Have I missed something?
