WinVNC connection cutting out video on Win98

Hello All-
A remote system at a client's site is having problems with VNC. This is a Win98 box, don't know hardware details but I've used VNC on several other similar systems at the same site without experiencing this problem.
WinVNC (running in app mode) starts up fine and responds to connection requests. When connection is established, it gives the "obtaining first screen image" message, and then network traffic stops. From talking to the client, the host machine then loses the video signal from the monitor (monitor shows "no signal detected"), necessitating a hard restart. Closing the VNC client at my end doesn't help. At that point, I can still ping the machine, and *sometimes* it will even respond on its VNC port (the inconsistency here is puzzling), but it responds not at all to another VNC connection request.
Any ideas what may be happening here? As far as I know, this machine has never had any display problems. I don't have a lot of specific info on the hardware, but can get it if anyone has a lead.
Thanks very much!!!
Matthew
