Almost. I'd like to interact with a console, ideally right after
booting. I don't need vnc access to the boot messages before the
kernel is up --- there is some console for that. But the cosole is
not char based but line or block oriented (both exist). Now I'm
investigating how to get access to a char or even better graphics
based virtual console.
This is where vnc came to my mind.

No it's a mainframe (S/390).
