SSH, VNC, Windows

In that case you'd need to forward ports 5800 and 5900, I think, using the
SSH client. Then convince the Java client to connect to localhost. I think
I've heard discussion of this before but I don't use the Java client so I've
never really paid attention.

Internet Explorer + Java VNC --> SSH client ===================> SSH server
--> VNC server

AS per:

Internet Explorer  \
Netscape Navigator \________________>> SSH >> WinVNC (and back again)
Opera               /

I have no idea where SSH client would fit in.

Unless I misunderstand what you're saying, it has to happen from the client
side. If you've already connected to the server directly with VNC, you've
got an unencrypted connection across the network, and SSH won't help you.

It works like this:

VNC viewer --> SSH client ======================> SSH server --> VNC server
-------------------------                         -------------------------
  Client computer                                   Server computer

-- Unencrypted loopback connection
== Encrypted network connection
