vnc viewer fails but java client OK

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools ->
Event Viewer

Take a look at all three logs in the Event Viewer, then try the VNC
client, and then check to see if there is anything new in the logs
(which you may need to refresh).

Have you tried the VNC client as various user accounts (especially
administrator)?  Is your system part of a domain?
