Quick question: Is X windows required for VNC?

Hi everyone,

I tried to use vncserver on a Solaris box that didn't have an X window 
system installed (it's using CDE primarily as of now). We ran into problems 
trying to get it to work, so I was wondering: is having X windows necessary 
for VNC to work? If so, are there ways around this problem?
