black screen on vnc - novice

Hi,

can someone please help?

I have a a vnc service set up on my server. When i connect to the server 
from my laptop with VNC it shows a connection window but in it i
see a black screen, with a "dot" instead of a cursor. This is not the screen 
saver.
when I connect to the service with terminal services client, the VNC screen 
will
show the desk top of the server, but i still cant do anything with it from 
the VNC
screen.

I am sure this has something to do with the service on the client, as i can 
view other
servers with my VNC on my lap top.  I am using windows 2000 can someone
please help???
