-depth not working?

Hello i'm using vncviewer on redhat linux.

vnc version:

3.3.3r2-27

i issue a:

> vncviewer -depth 8 10.1.1.2


The depth never takes effect, it always says 32 instead of the specifed
value of 8.

Anyone know why?
