KDE again

That is very strange. I use both KDE 1.x and 2.x under VNC in both
solaris and linux with no problems.
I will suggest that you kill your VNC server,
kill all KDE processes, start a new VNC server without loading anything
in it, set the proper display variable and type "startkde".
What is then happening?
Make sure that nothing is run in the server before you run startkde,
not even a window manager...
