Gray Screen instead of login screen

Hi,

I have just successfully installed vnc as a service on a RH7.1 server using
xinetd. However, I am unable to see the login screen and only get a gray
screen.

I run the service as nobody and am not sure what is the problem as on the
server itself my init level is 5 and I use Gnome.

Could somebody tell me if I need to specify the xstartup file or something
and how to do it?

Any other suggestions / comments will also be thankfully accepted.
