And it's not just Apple that's used that technology - it's been in 
the Acorn RiscOS for rather a while as well.  My parents have a 
RiscPC 600 from early 1994, with it's original ROM, and which 
supports sub-pixel font anti-aliasing at any font size.  It made text 
look *so* much better, even though the Acorn used the larger 96dpi 
screen resolution to begin with.
