sub-pixel anti-aliasing through vnc ?

Depends on the graphics system running at the client end...
If the graphics system (hardware or software or combined) is capable of
doing sub pixel font rendering with an algorithm matching that of the
server, I think it should be possible.
BTW, just as a info note, what MS is touting as new technology (i.e. Sub
pixel font rendering) is infact around 23 years old.
It was used by Steve Wozniak when he designed the Apple ][ to give a
good output for fonts on the television screens then being used for display.
