Keystrokes Ignored on Linux apps

I am experienceing a strange problem with operating 'cooledit', a text
editor for linux, via a vncviewer running on W98.
Cooledit will accept all keystrokes except for the '#' which it completely
ignores. I have posted on the comp.os.linux.misc newsgroup and received a
reply telling me that NEdit suffers the same problem except that it won't
accept ANY keystrokes.
This seems to be similar to the problems of sending input to a DOS window on
the vncserver mentioned in the FAQ/mailing list but I can't understand why
only one key is affected in Cooledit.
Can anyone shed any light on this strange problem?
Software in Use:
Server = Redhat 6.0, Vncserver 3.3.3R2
Client = W98, Vncviewer 3.3.3R7
