persistent connection drops

environment WinVNC is being run in:

Server:
NT4 Server, SP6a
Load on box: extremely light in every department
VNC Server and helper, ver: 3.3.3 rev 7
Two IP addresses, one on loopback adapter, the other normal LAN adapter.

Client:
NT4 Workstation, SP6a
On modem or LAN connection (no firewall inbetween when on LAN connection)
VNC client: 3.3.3 rev2 (I downloaded the same package for all machines! err...)

I'm mostly using the default settings, except for polling config and password.

Basically whenever a login/logoff request is being made, the connection to 
the client either hangs or drops.

Once I've got a logged in session on the NT box (made using previous 
dropped VNC connects), the VNC/NT session is stable.  Until NT logoff, in 
which case the VNC connection drops again.

I've tried searching through FAQ/mailing list archives/docs, but either I 
haven't had enough caffeine yet this morning, or I can never find a 
solution to the previously asked question :)

Other quick question:

I've tried following the docs on specifying server port that VNC server 
listens in on but no success (FYI I do then reset those settings to 
defaults again after failed attempts).  Can anyone cook up a quick 
step-by-step 'this is how you do this' for me pls? :)
