VNC: Authentication failed ?! Who else out there uses a Linux client to connect to an NT server?

I've written in twice on this and noone seems to have recognized the problem.

I use SuSE 7.0 Professional Linux and connec to an NT4 machine at work through
a RAS. As you noted, the java version works.

What made you think to try using the command line host name? I can't wait to
get home to try that!

What puzzles me is that no settings in ~/.Xdefaults or switches on the command
line affect the password query. I tried to make it read from the ~/.vnc/passwd
and tried to make it do an ascii terminal prompt.

One thing I haven't tried to verify yet due to time constraints is the default
settings in the vnc package delivered with the system (package VNC 3.3.2-18
series xap). I don't understand why I wouldn't be able to override them,
though.

I've downloaded and compiled it to make sure I'm using all the right libraries
and was getting ready to start tracing the code to see where the erroneous
decision is made to use the x popup (the default behaviour is supposed to be
standard io (ascii terminal).

Well, at least I (hope I) know I can get the faster performance, now. The java
version is sssslllllooooowwwww!!!!!

I would really like to know if anybody else out there (besides us, DD) is
using Linux to connect to NT. If so, which Linux distribution and version,
what command line switches and X resources are you using? Do you enter the
server name as a parameter or do you enter it in the X popup or even at the
ascii terminal prompt?

Subject: VNC: Authentication failed ?!
Message text:

Hello out there,

I have been checking the archives for quite some while,
but I could not find anything which would solve my problem,
so forgive me if I ask stuff that has been already asked
and answered over and over again ...

I am having problems with VNC on Linux:
Let's aay, I start a VNC-Server on machine A, and
want to connect to it from machine B using
VNC-Viewer by using the command "vncviewer",
the Window asking for the hostname pops up,
so I enter "machineA:1" and so the next window asking
for the password pops up, and when I enter the
correct password I get the error message
"Authentication failed", although the password is correct.

Now, funny thing is this:
When I connect using Netscape - it works !!!
Also, when I try connecting from the very same
machine the server is running on - it also works.
And, most funny part is this:
Instead of only typing in "vncviewer" I can add
the hostname to the command: "vncviewer machineA:1"
so it asks me the password in the shell, instead
of a popup window: "Password: ..."
And this also works ! So, why oh why come that
"vncviewer" gives me the error message
"Authentication failed." when it actually does
work when I add the hostname as command line argument ???

Anyone having an idea ... or a patch to fix this ?
