The entire protocol really needs an overhaul. The problem is, everyone
wants to talk about it, but then they say "oh, it'll break all our existing
applications", conveniently forgetting that it's perfectly viable to make
clients and servers compatible with both versions of the protocol.

An RFC-style document describing any "new" protocol would be an advance, I
think. There is already a PDF file describing the current v3.3 protocol
(without the various recent enhancements) which I am finding sufficient to
build the new VNC Server for Macintosh with.

Personally speaking, I would *love* to get my hands dirty and upgrade the
whole lot! However, I have severely limited time due to my university
course, and what time I have is being spent on getting up-to-scratch Mac
VNC tools available. However, I am sure my input would be valued by
whoever wishes to do the "donkey work" of shuffling paper and wordsmithing.
Also, I would not have much difficulty in implementing any new protocol in
my applications.

calculator and soldering-iron)
