Consider the following: For opening a connection, VNC uses two ports: 58xx and 59xx, where xx is the display number (as it is called in the properties dialogue). 
If You want to forward a VNC Connection by SSH (or something else, maybe a proxy software), You have to forward both ports (or more if VNC auto-accepts 
connections and more than one at once should be possible).
Keeping this in mind should prevent other connection problems at all.
