Have you tried physically accessing the machine from its console when
this happens ? If its power management then perhaps the way VNC works
does not keep the machien awake, although this sounds a bit perculiar
?

And note, I have W2K server with VNC as a test and it seems to have
been working okay, but then I believe I have turned off power
management.
