NT Server hangs when accessing from a VNC client

Hi John,

It does sound more likely that you have a Motherboard / Other problem, as
VNC doesn't interact that much with other programs, bar the VNCHOOKS.DLL
that captures the keystrokes, screen updates, etc ...

If you have any non-VNC type questions then I suggest you email me direct
rather than through the list :)

Hope you sort it soon, and continue to support VNC, it's a great product,
that has saved countless on site visits or talks with people suffering from
SUS (Stupid User Syndrome) :) And best of all it's FREE :)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm running SP5 at the moment (and come to
think of it, I have not installed any of the post SP5 hotfixes). And yes,
the driver I found for the Mach64 was the last rev as of 2/27/97, and it's
the only NT 4.0 driver for this card. (It's an older card, but I got a heck
of a price on it.)

Since I first posted my question though, I've had the machine lock up on me
when VNC was NOT running at all, so I'm afraid I jumped the gun a little.
I'm beginning to think it may be a memory problem. Seems to hang right
around the 64MB mark (I have two 64MB DIMMs for a total of 128).

Though at the moment, I've got VNC running, I'm logged in, the memory usage
is up around 68MB, and I'm also hitting it with a browser (the box is also
running IIS 4.0, SQL Server 6.5, and other similar programs). An associate
of mine thinks it may be a motherboard problem as well.

I've got VNC running on multiple machines, and have not had any problems at
all (except back around the first of this year when the .zipfile for NT was
corrupt, and I couldn't get it to install...). All in all, I've been pretty
impressed with it.

Thanks again,

What service pack level are you running on ? and have you made sure that you
have recent/latest drivers from the manufacturer...

I have sometimes found in the past, that the very latest drivers are not
always idea, so see if you can find some slightly older ones that may work
and try it out.

P.S. Good on you for taking the time to research through the FAQ and
archive, as some people don't bother and then wonder why they can short
responses if any.

Hi all,

I'm new to the list, but have been using VNC for awhile, successfully I
might add. I've poured over the FAQ's like a good boy, and even dug through
some of the archives looking for an answer, so if this has already been
addressed, please be patient with me... ;>)

I installed the latest VNC service for NT on a new box I recently cobbled
together. I runs fine, I can connect to it just fine via the VNC viewer, but
occasionally the server just locks right up tight as a drum and stops
responding to RPC calls, keyboard and mouse commands, and drops off the
network.

It doesn't generate an error or reboot, it just hangs. It doesn't do it all
the time, only when trying to run something graphic intensive, like IE. The
video card is an ATI Mach64 GX, and I get the same results if I used the
built-in WinNT video drivers for the card, or the NT drivers from the
manufacturer.

Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Thanks
