VNC and KDM on Mandrake 7

I'm trying to get VNC working with KDM -- been rummaging through the VNCList
Archives. Haven't been able to successfully get VNC to work hand in hand
with KDM as I'd like to.
Here's what I've tried:
1. Run VNC with an empty .vnc/xstartup file, along with the -query
localhost switch. This works -- KDM comes up and I can login properly, and
get KDE. But -- if I logout something goes wrong and I can't log back in
again.
2. Putting Xvnc in the /xdm/Xservers file. This doesn't work at all -- my
regular X server dies, and I can't connect to Xvnc.
3. Grabbed the source for VNC and patched it with iXvnc. I can't seem to
compile this -- I wind up with an "error 2" and there's no binary in the
Xvnc/programs directory.
Has anyone got this working?
Thanks,
Bill
