The best way at present to improve connection peformance is to simplify
what is being sent.  Make sure you've turned off desktop wallpaper etc -
even a regular pattern can really slow things down.  After performing these
simple optimisations and applying Zlib, I don't think a reduction in bit
depth below 8 bit would significantly increase performance...

Out of interest, just how slow is your connection?  I have used VNC across
a 14.4k modem, without Zlib, and found it usable except when a photo was
accidentally encountered.
