I work in the IS Department at a newspaper. I have set up VNC on the PCs
in the Classified Department so that the Classified Supervisor can
monitor her employees. She monitors them for several different reasons:
1) They have to have access to a web browser because we put our ads on
the internet and sometimes customers call for help in trying to find
exactly where their ad shows up on the internet. Because they have
access to the internet -- sometimes they play, but they are less likely
to do so as much if they know their boss is looking over their shoulder.
2) To ensure quality Customer Service, she monitors their phone
conversations with customers. Depending on the conversation, it may
prove useful to monitor how they are taking the ad as well.
3) E-mail is provided to these folks as another way for their customer's
to get a hold of them. Just like access to the internet, there is a
potential for abuse. Our company policy states that the supervisor is
allowed to read e-mail and we do when we use VNC to look at their
sessions -- and all they do for 45 minutes is e-mail to each other and
to friends outside of work.
When necessary, she can take a screen shot of the employees screen so
that there is evidence when confronting the employee about the fact that
they are spending too much time playing on the internet or with e-mail
rather than doing the job WE pay them to do!
If we have the VNC icon disabled, the employees don't know when she is on
their computer.
