Thank you, thank you, Tyran. You solved my problem, and apparently saved me
$235 plus long distance charges.
My experience is that it is necessary to remove the ".sam" extension, which
I never knew to do until Tyran clued me in. The DNS "hosts.sam" file will
not work on any of our Win9x/NT systems, but "hosts" does. My Win98 machine
is also Win98 second edition!
I can testify that hours of searching Microsoft documentation and the MSDN
produced nothing that would indicate that the ".sam" extension indicates
"sample", as it does. What an incredible oversight!

Maybe MS wised up and ignores the sam extension altogether. Four years
ago, we were working with a hosts.sam file on NT just as described in the
documentation (it actually said to edit the hosts.sam file) but nothing
worked. We called tech support (two hour wait, long distance charge and
$235 incident charge) just to be told that the .sam extension needed to be
removed.
