To be fair, though, the whole hosts/hosts.sam thing is documented. Heck, the
hosts.sam file even tells you that it is a sample file, and that the .sam
extension needs to be removed.

Maybe MS wised up and ignores the sam extension altogether. Four years
ago, we were working with a hosts.sam file on NT just as described in the
documentation (it actually said to edit the hosts.sam file) but nothing
worked. We called tech support (two hour wait, long distance charge and
$235 incident charge) just to be told that the .sam extension needed to be
removed.
And that's why NT is bad for the industry in general ie. it encourages a
whole lot of people who know little about the system to call themselves
Administrators just because they think they can do anything with a GUI.
