Lockup? Freeze up?

from time to time i will be using VNC to connect to my home PC on a cable
connection from my work connection (T1) and when i go to close a certain
program, it will lockup my machine, and drops my connection. well not
acctualy lock it up, but it still responds to pings, but wont accept any
kind of connection via VNC or anything for that matter. only after some one
at home moves the mouse or something like that does it start responding
again. what i want to know is if #1 this is a common/see before problem, and
#2 if there is anyway of kicking the current connection off, becuase its
seems like, if i tryed to connect early, from work, it wont actualy say
"must have wrong server, server not responding" or what ever it says when
VNC is not running, but it will just wait......and even after hours of
waiting, when some one moves the mouse, it will then popup a password dialog
box.

Any help would be great!!!

Thanks in advance!

Josh.
