Network Traffic generated by WinVNC

> We have been running some tests here to evaluate the network traffic
generated by WinVNC. So far, the only tests we have been running are across
our WAN where it is difficult to tell if high level's of traffic are
actually related to WinVNC being used, or are coincidental. From the tests
done in this area though, the traffic generated has been fairly bandwidth
intensive. We are planning to do some thorough closed off tests next week
with a custom set-up LAN which will be used ONLY for WinVNC so that we can
gain fully accurate results. Before we do this though, I would be very
interested if anyone else has done similar tests, or if they know network
traffic to be a problem, or even if they know it to not be a problem. We do
not want to find that running WinVNC has a detrimental effect on other live
services.

VNC runs over TCP/IP, which takes care of congestion control in a pretty
decent way. It also only sends updates on demand, thus limiting the update
rate according to network bandwidth and latency - if the network is
overloaded with other traffic, updates will become correspondingly
infrequent. Any usage stats you get on a dedicated LAN will be just that -
stats for a dedicated LAN. They won't give you any information on how it
would behave with other services on the same wire.

To be honest, you're more likely to notice other services make your VNC
session go a little sluggishly than the other way around.

Cheers,

James "Wez" Weatherall
