Mystery Freeze

Hi folks, hoping someone here can flash on a reason I'm having a strange
problem with my most stable computer.

I have the VNC server running on both my networked digital Starion machines (a
942 and 950).

The 942 system was upgraded using a k-6 333mhz upgrade from Evergreen Tech and
is the one that keeps going (much to my suprize) and has had it's memory
upgraded from 16 to 72 meg

The 950 is totally stock except it now has 40meg of ram instead of it's 16meg
stock.

The 942 has 8megram soldered to the motherboard mixed with 64meg of expensive
ram

the 950 has 8megram soldered to the motherboard mixed with 32meg of used cheap
ram. this machine has had occasional page faults as did the other machine when
the memory was installed in it instead of the new 64meg stuff.

Ok here's the deal. I can use the VNC viewer on the 950 and control the 942
running the server for hours.. HOWEVER if I try to run the VNC viewer on the
942 to control or even spy on the 950, it just freeses after a random number
of minutes. usually less than 5.

I have tried stopping all the other programs incluidng the proxy server and
even with nothing running (besides win98) it has the same symptoms.

Before I tear apart the computers, Do you think it's a memory problem? they
have identical video systems and according to Digital the only motherboard
changes were to allow the 150mhz by changing something in the pci bridge. (the
942 refuses to use the network card I have now in the 950)

I figure I'll wait and see if anyone has any good ideas before I RIP the
memory out and try swapping it between systems. I just hate to uncover and
untangle all these wires and things balanced on top of them. (using the two
towers as a kind of gadget table)

Thanks in advance for your Gurulike responses
