Why would it if encryption was implemented in both servers and viewers?

No, you don't HAVE to patch, but there are two issues: setting up the
tunnel (you have to do it by hand every time your port number changes),
and the productivity issue (as I said, the current MacOS doesn't handle
two or more processes very efficiently, and there are probably other
platforms for which the tunnelling can be problematic). Not that SSH is
bad, it's just would be more efficient to build encryption right into VNC.
