Using VNC with GDM (or xdm/kdm)

I'm trying to do the same as well using gdm (Gnome' login manager).
I've added the following to /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf:

0= /usr/bin/X11/Xvnc :0 -depth 16 -geometry 1024x768 -httpd
/usr/share/vncserver

I can connect, but only get the grey screen. I've had it working with
xdm, but gdm's got me stumped so far.

What I'd really like to do is be able to run this and then connect
svncserver to localhost:0, but I've gotten no joy there either.
