As a side note, you usually don't need to mess with the registry for
replacing in-use files on NT:

1-There's a NTRK console utility for that (mv.exe if memory serves)

2-Even while you can't modify a file from the explorer GUI, you can
often do it directly from the command-line prompt using REN:
 REN MSVCRT.DLL MSVCRT-old.DLL
 REN MSVCRT-new.DLL MSVCRT.DLL
This doesn't work for all in-use file, but is OK for most files owned by
the system -- I often use it for hacking explorer.exe :-) Once you
swapped the file, you'll have at least to restart the service(s) using
it, or reboot if the previous isn't enough.

Note that this trick doesn't work on Win9x (but on 9x you can simply
"Reboot in MS-DOS mode" and perform your changes, which here too is
simplier than playing with registry or wininit.ini).
