vnc on linux as a support tool

Our desktop support staff here use vnc to connect to remote machines
and help users fix their problems by observing what they do etc.

These staff are currently looking into linux and products like
staffoffice as a replacement for the windows environment. They would
like the functionality they have on windows available on linux.

I know that by making the users use Xvnc as their regular X server and
using vncviewer as the only application run by real X server this can
be achieved - but given the increases in performance from new X
servers this does not seem desirable.

I remember once trying teleport - but am aware that this is not under
current development.

Is there any way to do this? Is anyone working on it? One thought I
had was weather Xvnc has been moved over to Xfree 4.0 - perhaps as a
module that could be loaded along with the regular X device module?
