Running VNC to help poor people with Micro$osft computers

I sometimes communicate with people (often through AOL IM) (like my mother)
and tell them:
In order to do A, you have to do steps 1,2,3
Naturally, they ain't computer people, they don't know what I'm talking about
and they're afraid to do anything new (really good attitude microsoft
instilled -- since computers are so fragile, don't do anything new since they
may crash, break, or burn).

If I have these people install VNC on their computers (generally windows 95/98)
can they set up their computers so I can remote control it from here
(I have a good internet connection with a cable modem, they have phone
modems and AOL connections).

This sounds good in theory...its easier than traveling all over the world...

Of course, I'd rather they use linux, but that's another story ;-)
