this is an area with which I'm fairly familiar.  That is, if your
phone is, as I suspect, establishing a PPP connection with your 98 PC.
My guess is that the two machines are getting most of the way through
the PPP negotiations, then failing near the end on some part.
   So, the trick is to figure out where it might be failing.  You
should (in theory) be able to get the dial up server to generate a log
of the PPP negotiations.  Go into the Properties for the connection
you're using in the dial up server, select the Advanced tab, select
"Record A Log File" in the Property box, and set it to "Yes".
   After you try connecting again, you should find a file called
Ppplog.txt in your Windows (or somewhere below, perhaps) directory.
If you want to send that to me, privately, I'll be happy to look it
over and see if I can figure out what's happening.
