Confused about registry activity

In Windows9x, it is possible to install some kind of serial or parrallel
connection between 2 computers... So perhaps a normal part of network
'things' is checking if these are present?

Could someone do the same check on an older version of vnc? This could point
the cause of this in new code since that version if that one doesn't do it,
or it could let us know that older versions did this too and that this not
causing the defrag problem...
