I know this issue as we are still running some 486 based machines...
But as you mention StarOffice: don't you have repaint problems running
it on VNC? I always have to click somewhere on the screen (or request
a screen refresh) to have the screen painted :-(. I tried various
settings, but nothing helped so far (server and client both on Windows
NT/9x).

I run NT as a client to linux as a server. The linux box has Star Office on
it. It loads SLOWLY, but after it loads, the repainting works FLAWLESSLY.
I created a drawing (not a bitmap) document, and I could scroll around the
picture in real-time.
